May is a great time to be here. Here in northern Italy, the weather is warm, but not the very high temperatures of July and August. Temperatures in Verona, for example, average lows of around 13 deg C (55 deg F) over night to daily high temperatures of about 25 deg C (77 deg F). We do get rain in May though and it’s useful to have a small folding umbrella.
It will be warmer in Central and southern Italy and a bit cooler in the Alps in general. Rome is warmer in the evenings than here with lows close to 15 deg C (60 deg F), but the highs average about the same. There’s also much less rain there in May on average.

You can find climate averages for many places here in Italy on sites like: http://www.eurometeo.com/english/climate/city_LIPX/id_Tmax/meteo_verona%20italy
Bring comfortable shoes for walking.
